Community Engagement

Regarding its Community Engagement policy, PPGPEGI has prioritized the following actions:

a) Prioritizing local and/or regional themes in the Program’s final projects

Based on the mission and objectives of the Program, the policy is primarily focused on local and regional engagement, consistent with the goals of a professional master’s degree that attracts students who bring questions arising from their professional practice as teachers or administrators and seek theoretical foundations and solutions for these issues.

Thus, the main goal provides for actions aimed at ensuring that final projects address local or regional themes, with advisors responsible for guiding both the development of the projects and their implementation.

Another goal, included in the Program’s strategic planning for the four-year period, refers to expanding the dissemination and application of research results already obtained, through the establishment of institutional partnerships with the municipal and state school systems, rather than relying solely on isolated initiatives, as has occurred so far. Among the actions planned to achieve this goal are the presentation of the main research results to municipal and regional education leaders and the offering of lectures, continuing education activities, and advisory services, in order to broaden the application of these results in solving basic education problems. In this regard, initial contacts have already begun with the Municipal Secretary of Education, Prof. Dr. Fernando Diana, who took office in January 2025 and was one of the first master’s students in the Program.

b) Institutional development of the following activities: participation in national research networks; partnerships with basic education systems; continuing education for education professionals; advisory and consulting services; organization of events; outreach to rural and interior regions; collaboration with social movements.

During the four-year evaluation period, alumni responses to the annual questionnaires have confirmed that the results of their final projects, focused on fundamental education issues, have returned to the institutions where they work both as innovative knowledge on specific topics and as contributions to professional practice or institutional management, always aiming at clarification, analysis, and the search for scientifically grounded solutions, with the perspective of producing change.

We justify this statement based on the objectives of individual investigations or groups of completed and ongoing projects, which particularly address the following themes: institutional and school evaluation instruments; teaching materials; practical teacher training; and studies on school dropout.

Regarding the master’s students, most work in different roles as teachers and administrators and develop projects aimed at solving diagnosed problems in basic education, such as:

  • Restructuring pedagogical proposals and curriculum revision at different levels of schooling;
  • Improvement of Continuing Education programs for Basic Education teachers;
  • Enhancing understanding of teaching and learning practices and diversifying strategies used in daily school life across different areas of knowledge (music, Portuguese language, literacy, physical education, psychomotricity, robotics, educational games, arts, geography, chemistry, etc.);
  • Improving teacher–student interactions in various teaching contexts.

In the research projects conducted by PPGPEGI faculty, the interfaces with Basic Education are also central to both research lines (Teaching Processes and Educational Management), all of which seek solutions to important educational issues.

Local outreach of the research conducted is also strengthened by faculty participation in lectures directed to teachers from the Municipal and State School Systems and Technical Schools.

Collaboration with social movements can also be demonstrated through faculty participation in literacy projects at a Non-Governmental Organization (Lar Juvenil Domingos Sávio) and in the coordination of the Afro-Brazilian Studies Center – NEAB/Uniara.

Internationalization

Considering that this is a recent course, which began in 2014, initiatives related to internationalization are in their initial phase.

We can point out the Alcalá Agreement, which has been happening since 2017.

Professor Dr. Eladio Sebastián Heredero, a professor in our Program and retired from the University of Alcalá de Henares, has been mediating internships for students from our Program at the University of Alcalá:

  • Master`s student, Class of 2017: Elizete Varussa Seneda (February to April 2018) taking a course and doing an internship in public schools in the city of Alcalá.

Since 2014, the Program`s professors have been participating in international events, presenting papers, as well as publishing chapters and/or books in partnership with international researchers.

Other internationalization actions are being considered, depending on obtaining external funding.

Research Groups

The Master`s Program in Teaching Processes, Management and Innovation has two research groups: "Teacher Training and Pedagogical Practices" and "Organization and Management of Educational Institutions".

The "Teacher Training and Pedagogical Practices" research group encompasses investigations focused on the various stages of teacher training and professional performance, considering institutional contexts, levels, and different types of teaching, as well as the various aspects involved in pedagogical practice. These studies focus on the life and work paths of teachers, concepts, and characteristics of pedagogical practices, as well as research related to the processes of socialization, teaching, and learning in the different curricular components within the scope of school education. The aim is that the set of these investigations, based on theoretical contributions from the area of Education, contribute to the understanding of teacher training and work in educational relationships.

The research group "Organization and Management of Educational Institutions" aims to contribute to the advancement of academic production on the issue of public policies for education and their repercussions on the performance of management teams of schools and other educational institutions regarding leadership, organization, and ongoing training in service, as well as the reading and use of educational indicators in planning actions. Since it is linked to a professional postgraduate course, emphasis is placed on theoretical studies, empirical research, and performance in educational management, in various areas and modalities.

It is important to emphasize that the two groups are in constant dialogue with each other and that they bring together professors and researchers with vast experience in the field of Education, guiding the development of bibliographical, legal and empirical research and intervention plans that contemplate different institutional contexts, levels and types of education. They also work on publishing books and texts in specialized journals, as well as presenting papers at educational events, seeking to establish partnerships between professors, students, and former students and to encourage master`s students and graduates to publicize their work and continue their studies. The research of both groups is concerned with bringing together the various voices on the issues studied: the voice of the teacher, the coordinator, the school principal, among others, and debating them in the light of different theoretical frameworks. The research groups are composed mainly of professors from Uniara and professors and researchers with recognized competence in the field of education who were invited to join them.
